By Tom HatfieldWatching Bethesda’s Fallout 4 presentation at this year’s E3 was a strange experience for me. I was excited by the new features, but many of them weren’t actually new to me. Actually, they were hauntingly familiar, because a lot of them appear to have been inspired by the Fallout 3 and New Vegas modding scene.Bethesda actually has a long history of introducing new features that appear to be inspired by mods.
Before Skyrim’s Hearthfire expansion there was, and before New Vegas added weapon mods, modders had put them in Fallout 3. So here’s my educated guess on what mods might’ve inspired Fallout 4, which handily doubles as a guide to getting Fallout 3 looking close enough to the sequel to keep you going until November. Real Time SettlerWhat if I told you that Fallout 4’s hugely impressive settle-the-wasteland-and-build-a-community feature already existed as mods for both and? Ones you can play right now? Real Time Settler offers almost the exact same experience that Fallout 4 promises. House building? Creating a settlement?
Protecting it from raiders? Just take a look at the trailer above and compare it to Bethesda’s Fallout 4 presentation. RTS isn’t even the only mod to try this; offers a similar build-and-defend game. FelloutWhen I saw the original teaser trailer for Fallout 4, the first thing I noticed was the colour palette. As you may remember, unmodded Fallout 3 came with a strong green tinge, but Fallout 4 has scaled back the radioactive fog, instead using Hollywood’s favourite colour palette:. If you’ve dabbled in Fallout mods at all you’ve probably seen this before courtesy of, which removed Fallout 3’s green fog in favour of a red dirt and blue sky motif inspired by Mad Max.
Bethesda has apparently taken note of Fellout’s incredible popularity (it’s number three on Fallout Nexus’ highest rated mods list), and coloured Fallout 4 to match. Fallout Wanderers Edition and Project NevadaWatch the combat section of again. Notice anything? The whole thing feels a lot more like a first person shooter and less like an RPG that just happens to have guns.
Fallout 3 Silverlock
There’s iron sights visible at 29.38 mins and what appears to be a grenade hotkey at 30.15 mins, plus something that looks an awful lot like bullet time at 30.11 mins. All these features and more can be found in the wildly popular and its New Vegas equivalent,. Hopefully Fallout 4 will capture the deadly feel of FWE and Project Nevada’s combat as well as these nifty gimmicks. Weapon ModsRemember when I mentioned weapon mods in the intro? They were first introduced, where they were so popular that Obsidian added them to New Vegas as a feature.
Modders proceeded to up the ante by adding even more modding options with. Now it seems Bethesda has one upped them again with Fallout 4’s impressive customisation options. Expect modders to escalate things again once Fallout 4’s creation kit is released. Tailor MaidPower Armour (and possibly other armour too) in Fallout 4 is modular, with players able to equip individual pieces of armour individually to mix and match their own outfits. I’ve seen this before too, in, which breaks Fallout 3 and New Vegas’ existing outfits down into smaller chunks so that they can be re-arranged at will. In fact breaking down armour into its constituent components is a very popular pastime for Bethesda modders, with fulfilling a similar role in Skyrim. Hopefully by building this right into Fallout 4 Bethesda will avoid the clipping issues that occasionally result from the home grown versions.
